A spoilt Son who will not engage in any of the house chores, because I was surrounded by girls in the house, a very lazy boy.
but after I left for Lagos. Life as a kitchen cleaner thought me a lot of lessons.
I left kaduna, to badagry (oko afo) where I stay with my aunty for 1 month before I went for the job that I was called for in alogomeji yaba.
All that I was told was not what I went and meant in Lagos. It was a whole different story.
Life was hard as a kitchen cleaner. But what was I expecting? That I will go to Lagos and automatically start cooking.
How will I start? I don't do all these things at home, worse I went and got a job in a very busy restaurant. I was placed in the Chinese section and I will be the one washing vegetables, and all of the fry pans and pots In my section.
I hardly even have time to sit as I will still be asked to mop the floor and clean the walls due to the splash of oil.
I almost gave up, every night I just prayed for God to let the night last longer, 5:40 Am is always a nightmare for me as I have to be in the kitchen to take out everything we will be needing from the store man, wash vegetables, and cut them.
We had a very rude manager at that time. One of the Chinese chefs will talk to me aggressively and every day I just wish to place his face on the burner and roast it.
These two people were the reasons I vow not to give up and will learn how to cook.
I was always at the sink washing I never allowed my dreams to sink. I created my happiness by happily doing all the tasks they kept assigning to me.
Got used to all of their insults that even when they insult me it does not get to me.
All this makes me humble that until today I can submit to anyone to learn.
People say I am very good and versatile with different country cuisines, if only you know how I learned all of this cooking.
To all the kitchen cleaners here, that is not the end of the road. Every day you go to the kitchen, be smart and humble. Makes friends with the chefs. Don't just live that company and go to another kitchen to be a kitchen cleaner.
Take the advantage of that kitchen you are in and learn how to cook.
